Injury updates
The Washington Commanders announced several roster moves before the start of today’s practice. Three players have had their 21-day practice window opened, and they will start the next step of their return to the playing field today. LB Jordan Magee looked like he was going to have a big role in the defense after getting picked in the 5th round this year. He suffered a meniscus injury during the first preseason game, and had successful surgery. He was placed on short-term injured reserve, and is now eligible to return.
Marcus Mariota was signed to be the backup to whichever quarterback the Commanders took with the No. 2 overall pick this year. Mariota suffered a groin injury during preseason, and then a chest injury landed him on injured reserve. Dan Quinn has praised his mentoring of Daniels during his time with the rookie, and his work in the QB room while he’s been sidelined. Jeff Driskel has served as the backup in Mariota’s absence, and Washington has the option of keeping him on the 53-man roster, or trying to cut him and re-sign him to the practice squad.
Efe Obada suffered multiple leg fractures during Week 11 last season, and he was placed on injured reserve. He started of this season on the physically unable to perform(PUP) list. Like IR, players on PUP have to miss a minimum of four games before returning. Obada played DE and DT for Ron Rivera’s Commanders, and we should get a look at what role he’ll play in Dan Quinn/Joe Whitt Jr’s new Washington defense.
Jamison Crowder suffered a calf injury last week, and missed the game against the Arizona Cardinals. There weren’t any updates since he’d been ruled out, and now he’s been placed on injured reserve. Crowder had been slotted in as the punt returner, and Olamide Zaccheaus replaced him last Sunday. Washington didn’t announce any corresponding moves to fill their open roster spot.
We have made the following roster moves:
— Opened the 21-day practice window for LB Jordan Magee, QB Marcus Mariota and DL Efe Obada
— Placed WR Jamison Crowder on the Reserve/Injured List— Washington Commanders (@Commanders) October 2, 2024
The Washington Commanders also announced a pair of roster moves yesterday. Two of their practice squad players were signed by teams dealing injuries of their own this week. The Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran G Max Scharping after suffering more OL injuries. The San Francisco 49ers poached LB Kalen Graham to add to their 53-man roster.
Washington has now added G Marquis Hayes and re-signed S Sheldrick Redwine to their practice squad. Redwine was with the Commanders for less than a week before getting released during roster cut downs. Hayes was a 7th round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2022, but spent most of his time on injured reserve and the practice squad.
