Washington makes several roster moves to deal with injuries
The Washington Commanders suffered several injuries on defense during their 30-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Jonathan Allen suffered a severe pec injury, and has been placed on IR. Dan Quinn confirmed it on Monday, and the team made it official today. Allen is a former 1st round pick, who has been an anchor to the defensive line, along with his former Alabama teammate Daron Payne. He has one year left on his contract, and the team will need to make a big decision on his future after the season.
Rookie DE Javontae Jean-Baptiste(ankle) was also injured Sunday, along with free agent signing Dorance Armstrong(rib). JJB was also placed on IR today, keeping him off the field for at least four games. He was a 7th-round pick this year out of Notre Dame, and play more than 40% of the snaps on defense during the last two games.
Washington also announced two signings to fill the roster spots opened up by injury. The Commanders signed DT Sheldon Day from the practice squad, and he’ll likely be active on Sunday. He was elevated for the Week 1 game against the Buccaneers, and played 36% of the snaps on defense. This week’s injuries give Day his opportunity to return to a 53-man roster. Defensive end Jalyn Holmes was the second signing, and will provide depth on the line. He was a 4th-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2018, drafted from Ohio State. He had his most productive season in 2020, but was released by the Vikings the following year.
We have made the following roster moves:
— Placed DT Jonathan Allen and DE Javontae Jean-Baptiste on the Reserve/Injured List
— Signed DE Jalyn Holmes
— Signed DT Sheldon Day from the practice squad
— Signed DT Carl Davis to the practice squad— Washington Commanders (@Commanders) October 16, 2024
The Washington Commanders also signed veteran DT Carl Davis to the practice squad. This move was reported yesterday, but wasn’t made official until the team made their other moves today. Mike Garafolo also reported that Washington had CB Kyle Fuller, the older brother of former Commanders CB Kendall), in for a workout. He hasn’t played in 2 years, and is 32 years old.
Also working out for the #Commanders today: CB Kyle Fuller, who hasn’t played since 2022. No indication he’ll sign at this point. https://t.co/Knkp9posUL
