Washington Commanders Settle Lawsuit to Shed Final Layer of Synder Era

June 21, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Washington Commanders find themselves plagued by Dan Snyder’s aftermath once again. However, the franchise took another step in the right direction as an investigation concluded with a settlement.

Before Josh Harris purchased the team last summer, Snyder did his best to avoid selling the team and to further diminish the brand. The former owner unlawfully kept security deposits for years after they should have been returned to season ticket holders.

Yesterday, Virginia General Attorney Jason Miyares announced that the Commanders settled for $1.3 million. Although this is a negative light for the franchise, it’s now behind them.

In 2022, the team faced similar legal issues, which resulted in a large refund for ticket holders. Snyder struggled with making ethical financial decisions, which continued to tarnish the franchise’s brand.

Harris and ownership have hit the ground running in terms of changing bad practices and the culture to revamp the team’s image and brand.

This offseason, the team dismissed Ron Rivera after the team finished the 2023-24 season with a 4-13 record. He coached the team for four seasons and finished with a 26-40-1 record.

While at the helm, Rivera led the franchise to one NFC East crown and a playoff appearance (2020). The Commanders have been at work this summer, they hired their 31st head coach, Dan Quinn. The front office took it a step further with a strong draft this season and selected nine players.

Notably, Washington drafted LSU QB standout Jayden Daniels, DL Jer’Zhan Newton, and CB Mike Sainristil. In free agency, the team made a few notable free agent signings, former Charger Austin Ekeler (RB) to a two-year deal, Bobby Wagner (LB), Marcus Mariota (QB), and Zach Ertz (TE).

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the 2024 training camp schedule and the Commanders will take place at the Ortho Virginia Training Camp Center at Commanders Park in Ashburn VA as the team begins a new era with a fresh start.
