What went wrong for Carson Wentz with the Colts?

March 13, 2022 by Redskins Wire

Bob Kravitz, senior writer for The Athletic and longtime Indianapolis sports columnist, discussed what went wrong for Carson Wentz, on the “Al Galdi Podcast” Friday morning. Here are some of Kravitz’s thoughts:

“For the most part, people are pretty thrilled that the Colts are moving on with the understanding we don’t know who is going to replace him.”

“It says something about their feelings for Carson Wentz that they are making this deal without a real clear plan B. And the fact that he got a chance to work with Frank Reich, who is his guy, his quarterback whisperer, and it didn’t work out.”

“It’s about the intangibles. It’s about his presence in the locker room. It is not that he is a bad guy, he is just the wrong guy. The Colts felt like he lacked leadership. He didn’t have the right personality for this locker room. They just felt like they couldn’t move forward with him.”

“When you consider how much they gave up to get him, that is really a reflection on Carson. They felt like they were not going to double down on a mistake they made one year earlier.”

“A lot of it is things that only coaches and players see, the intangibles that you need from a quarterback, that the Colts felt were lacking.”

“The guy has massive talent, and maybe the light will come on for him somewhere…Those last two games he couldn’t make the layups. He had guys wide open in the flat and he consistently tried to throw it into double coverage.”

“You can’t bring back a guy whom you’ve publicly said that we don’t know know…Chris (Ballard) is a super-smart guy. He is going to tell you the truth, whether you like it or not.”

“I was shocked what the Colts got out of the Commanders for Carson Wentz. I didn’t think they would get nearly that kind of haul. Plus, Washington is paying his whole salary, which is pretty sweet.”

“Carson Wentz is not a hot commodity… you guys in Washington will do what we did in Indianapolis. You’ll talk yourselves into it…We were talking ourselves into it and the people in Philly were saying that we had no idea.”

“We were warned, we didn’t listen, and Carson was Carson.”

“He seems like a decent enough guy. I don’t know if he’s got it upstairs to be a leader and to be the face of a franchise.”
