Where would you rank the Commanders' black alternate helmet?

July 26, 2022 by Redskins Wire

In June 2021, the NFL finally did something fans have been clamoring for years by allowing teams to wear a second alternate helmet, beginning in 2022.

When the Washington Commanders launched their official rebrand on Feb. 2, 2022, they not only debuted a new name, logo and uniforms but also new helmets. Yes, the Commanders would also debut an alternate helmet, and it would be unlike any in the team’s 90-year history.

Washington will get in on the alternate craze in 2022, officially donning a black helmet for the first time in franchise history. While one can criticize the name, the helmets are pretty sweet — both versions. Some fans would have preferred the gold “W” on the side of the alternate helmets, but the Commanders instead opted to go with the numbers, like they did the previous two seasons as the “Football Team.”

With so many other NFL teams also debuting alternate helmets, where would you rank Washington’s version?

The Cowboys, Giants, Falcons and Patriots all went the throwback route. All are good choices, except, well, maybe Dallas. The old Falcons’ red helmets and the original New England helmets are terrific choices.

CBS recently ranked the alternate helmets, with the Commanders at No. 6 among the eight alternate helmets reviewed. The Cowboys were No. 1 among the throwback helmets.

For a team debuting brand new uniforms (and a new name), the black alternate helmets may be the best ones in Washington.

Washington has never worn a black uniform in its history, but the helmet with the uniform combination is sharp. The D.C. flag patch on the sleeve is an amazing touch, as well as the numbers on the black helmet.

Since Washington was the first team to debut the alternate helmet, the all-black jersey and pants combination with gold numbers work.

Prince J. Grimes of For the Win also ranked the alternate helmets. At the time of his rankings, 13 total alternate helmets had been revealed. Grimes had the Falcons at No. 1 and the Commanders at No. 11.

Luckily for Commanders fans, everything about their look this season is new. Their alternate blacks are clean, just not very creative.

What do you think, Washington fans? Where do you rank the Commanders’ alternate helmets among those revealed?
