With two road games left, No. 21 Maryland looking to finish strong as they take on Northwestern thursday.

February 21, 2025 by Maryland Sports Blog

Three games left in the regular season, Maryland is looking to finish strong on the regular season. Thursday night, No. 21 Maryland hits the road to Midwest as they take on Northwestern.

Nathan’s Keys To Victory!

Northwestern has a struggling season, but they are looking to finish with momentum.

If they was a word for the season Northwestern has had: Rough. The Wildcats lose ten straight conference losses, however as of recent won two of their last three conference games opponent matchup might say otherwise but a win is a win. Here’s a interesting stat. Under Coach Joe McKeown, the Wildcats have only two NCAA tournament appearances.

The Front Court Battle of Maryland vs Northwestern

Northwestern has a front court that is underrated but matchup issue for some teams. While Maryland has the pieces to combat that, the wildcats have a bit more length. It will be interesting to see if Coach Brenda Frese goes with a bigger lineup or even takes a page out of Michigan’s playbook and run a guard orientated lineup. The only issue is foul trouble for the Terps’ and limited bench. Look for Saylor Poffenbarger, Christina Dalce, Allie Kubek, and even Amari Deberry to have extended run if needed.

Will Shyanne Sellers see limited minutes?

If you remember in Monday night’s victory against the Wolverines, Sellers had to be carried off the court after being pushed on her right knee that caused some aggravating. She is available to play, but it will interesting to see how the minutes will look like. Expect Kaylene Smikle & Sarah Te-Biasu to take on more of scoring and ball handling abilities. Mir McLean and Emily Fisher should see a bump in minutes as well.

How will Maryland challenge Northwestern on the defensive side of the ball?

The Wildcats have discipline issues on the defensive side of the ball. Northwestern is at the bottom of the Big Ten for a couple of things. Within the conference they are fifth in committing fouls, just as defensive team they are some many weaknesses. Maryland should take advantage. Getting to the free throw, and getting the wildcats in foul trouble should be the recipe for the Terrapins.

It also a homecoming game for Bri McDaniel and Emily Fisher who are both natives of Illinois respectively.
