New York’s All-Star pitcher Gerrit Cole didn’t quite play up to his standards in today’s matchup against the Detroit Tigers.
After holding Detroit scoreless in the first inning, Cole’s poor play finally caught up to him early in the second. With five walks, two errors and one hit allowed, the 31-year-old ace let the Tigers back into the game with 2 runs allowed.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone pulled Cole from the contest after just 1.2 innings. He was replaced by third-year pitcher Clarke Schmidt — who since has four strikeouts and just one hit allowed.

The most eye-popping statistic from Cole’s rough start was his five batters walked. This figure more than doubles his previous total for the season — walking just two batters through 9.2 innings pitched coming into today’s game.
Last year, Cole led the AL in wins (16) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.93). The four-time All-Star also finished second in Cy Young award voting.
The Yankees will hope that this was simply a one-off poor performance from their star pitcher.
New York currently leads Detroit 3-2 heading into the fourth.
