The vibes around Towson football have started to dampen a little as the Tigers drop another one. This one was a heartbreaking one for the home opener. The Tigers took a 14-7 lead at the half but were outscored 24-14 in the second half and fell 31-28.
Andrew Indorf had a better start this time around than his start vs Maryland. He went 18-29 with 238 yards a touchdown and an INT. Jon Dunmore also threw a touchdown to Kemarrion Battles for a 33 yard touchdown.
Al Wooten lead the charge running the football with 48 yards on 12 carries and scored 2 touchdowns. The Tigers struggled on the ground and were held to under 100 yards rushing. Jaceon Doss had some Randy Moss like number with 3 catches for 120 yards. Battles and Dunmore were the lucky recipients of touchdowns through the air.
Beau Brungard had himself a day to help get the Penguins the win. He had 277 yards passing with a touchdown and 18 carries for 100 yards and 2 touchdowns. He helped lead 2 drives that resulted in 2 field goals to tie and eventually win the game. Alex McDonald was the lone touchdown recipient and Mike Tomczak had himself a day as well with 7 catches for 116 yards.
Youngstown State’s defense allowed nearly 400 yards of total offense to the Tigers. Preston Zandier led them with 7 tackles. Their defense had 2 TFL’s and an a sack plus an INT from Justin Wimpey. Towson was unable to get a turnover. Rodney Roane and Ja’Mez Drummer led the defense with 7 total tackles a piece. Drummer added a sack as well and Mike Swain added a TFL.
Next up for Towson is yet another road game. This time heading north to Smithfield RI for a matchup with the Bryant Bulldogs. Bryant has a 2-2 record on the year with wins over UMass and Bentley University. They opened on the road against New Mexico State and are returning from a hard fought 50-48 2 OT loss to Campbell.
The Bulldogs are led by QB Brennan Myer, a Sophomore from Frisco, Texas. Myer so far has 975 yards passing and 6 touchdowns. However, he had 6 INT’s and had at least 1 in all 4 games they’ve played. The Tigers will have to be aggressive to force him into mistakes. He only has 17 yards rushing but has 2 touchdowns.
On the ground: Elijah Elliot and Dylan Kedzior have both been okay so far. They’ve combined for almost 400 yards and 4 touchdowns. Elliot can also catch out of the backfield and has over 100 yards on the season.
They will need to find Zyheem Collick and prevent him from making plays in the passing game. With 13 catches for 295 yards and 3 touchdowns, he’s a threat to the secondary. Aldrich Doe and Tristen Riley both have found the endzone this year and will look to continue those trends.
Towson will need to look out for both Brandon Perkins and Michael Otty. Perkins leads the team with 34 total tackles and adds a ton of experience as a Senior transfer. He played in 36 games at the University of New Hampshire before transferring to Bryant. Otty is a Graduate student and despite missing most of 2022 he’s craved out an impressive career. He was on the CAA Football second team. In the secondary, Azael Juste is one of their best DB’s with 2 INT’s and 4 defended passes. The Tigers will need to be well balanced offensively to have a chance to win.
This has the potential to be a big game for the Tigers. A good chance to get back in the win column and get their season back on track. Otherwise it’ll be a long day for the Tigers. GOH TIGERS!!
