Official: Canada Soccer Confirm ‘Mad Genius’ to Stay Till 2026 World Cup

The Canada men’s soccer team head coach, John Herdman, has confirmed that he will stay on as the team’s head coach after guiding them through the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The English coach aspires to take the Canadian side to the 2026 World Cup and has even rejected offers from other national sides to stay on.

John Herdman Voices Desire to Remain Canada Head Coach

The 47-year-old coach, who has been involved with both the CanMNT and the CanWNT in Canada since 2011, he wants to remain in his position and help the men’s soccer team get even better heading into the next World Cup. In a statement on Wednesday, John Herdman said: “Success at this level will always invite opportunity. I’ve received several offers in recent months, all of which I have turned down, including an offer from New Zealand Football.”

“At the World Cup in Qatar, our men showed the world that they belong at that level. I’m not going anywhere. We still have a job to do, and the objective is to take this team to the next level in 2026.” Canada Soccer’s General Secretary Earl Cochrane has also confirmed that Herdman remains contracted to the national side till the 2026 World Cup.

He said: “There is no doubt how much passion and commitment John and his coaching staff have poured into our men’s national team program, taking our men from outsiders to our first World Cup in 36 years. Everyone in our organization is committed to John and his coaching staff and he is the right person to take our country to new heights.”

The 47-year-old Englishman helped the Canada Men’s Soccer Team qualify for their first FIFA World Cup since the 1986 edition in the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Canada might not have won a game in the competition, but produced some encouraging performances and almost even pull off an upset against Belgium in the first game.

John Herdman has been involved with Canada Soccer for over a decade and gained his reputation for his good work with the Canada Women’s Soccer Team – helping them win the Bronze Medal in the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. The 47-year-old, who has reportedly been called a ‘mad genius’ by his assistant coaches in the past, has a 64 percent win rate as Canada Men’s National Team head coach.
