CHICAGO—The Orioles on Tuesday activated infielder Jordan Westburg from the 10-day injured list. Westburg had been on the injured list since August 19th with a sprained left ankle.
They also activated left-handed pitcher José Castillo, who was claimed off waivers from the Seattle Mariners on Monday. There are only 12 games left in the season, so interim manager Tony Mansolino has a limited time to evaluate him.
“You learn a little bit about the person,” Mansolino said. “We’ve already learned a lot in terms of what he’s done in other places, how he’s performed in those places, visually and the data that’s behind it, which is why he got claimed … There might be something that they see that our pitching group can help him out with.”
Castillo will try to take advantage of the opportunity.
“There’s always pressure in the big leagues,” Castillo said through a team translator. “I think you learn to control it and work past it. You learn to do that over time.”
Infielder Emmanuel Rivera was designated for assignment. He hit .250 with 13 RBIs in 42 games. Left-handed pitcher Grant Wolfram was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after Monday night’s game. Wolfram was 3-1 with a 4.85 ERA in 20 games.
Right-hander Albert Suárez will have a second opinion on his right elbow injury. He was put on the 15-day injured list on Monday.
“I think in the next week we’ll have something official on him,” Mansolino said.
Note: Triple-A Norfolk’s game with Jacksonville was rained out and will be made up as a doubleheader on Wednesday.
