Following Oregon’s upset win over Ohio State last Saturday, a rubber duck was found at the middle of OSU’s mid-field logo. Had Mario Cristobal known about it, chances are he would have picked it up.
The last time a team stormed into Columbus and came away with a massive non-conference win came back in 2017. Baker Mayfield and the Oklahoma Sooners dominated the Buckeyes in a 31-16 victory. Mayfield responded by waving and planting the University of Oklahoma flag at Ohio State’s mid-field logo.
Fast forward to last Saturday, then No. 12 Oregon controlled then No. 3 Ohio State at the line of scrimmage and came away with a 35-28 win. The Ducks celebrated on the field, as they should have. But Cristobal was sure to tell his players to respect the Buckeyes.
Just moments after escaping with a victory, Cristobal told his team to respect Ohio State and leave the mid-field logo alone.
“Nothing on the 50,” Cristobal said following the win. “Nothing on the logo. Respect your opponent.”

Thank you @coach_cristobal for winning with class. I love to see this. pic.twitter.com/zqkOrTKSc4— Jordan (@_JordanFlowers_) September 12, 2021
Talk about respect. Mario Cristobal is a class-act and he’s built a monster in Eugene.
The Ducks’ beatdown of Ohio State wasn’t just pivotal for Oregon, but for the Pac-12 as well. It’s been a long time since the conference out on the West Coast has received good publicity.
Oregon came close to changing the narrative these past few years, but just couldn’t get over the hump. The Ducks finally scored a monumental non-conference victory on Saturday.
Oregon has now cemented itself in the College Football Playoff conversation. The Buckeyes, meanwhile, have work to do to get back into the mix.
